How do I check a text the AI wrote for me?
Facts as of October 17, 2026
In detail
If you want every sentence the way you would have written it yourself, you should write it yourself. If you leave the phrasing to the AI, you check what it says, not how:
- Is every fact backed up? Can the source be opened?
- Is the quote right, word for word?
- Has the AI rendered your opinion correctly – or smoothed it, softened it, shifted it?
Have changes to an existing text shown to you in small pieces, paragraph by paragraph, and check the substance first, then the wording. A word that sounds “smoother” can carry a different meaning. If an AI announces a change as mere smoothing, that's precisely when to check the meaning.
A cross-check helps: a fresh session without conversation history compares the new version with the original, and a script sets out the differences word by word. For that, the original has to be stored separately – see How do I keep track of which part of a text is mine?.
In practice
This is how Thomas J. Weiss checks the texts on this site:
Then I pay attention to factual accuracy and whether my conviction is really rendered factually. When it's about other content, I pay attention to sources and to care.
(Original: „Dann achte ich auf sachliche Richtigkeit und ob wirklich meine Überzeugung sachlich wiedergegeben wird. Wenn es um andere Inhalte geht, achte ich auf Quellen und auf Sorgfalt.“)
On his play, while revising a paragraph, another model shifted four meanings and announced all four as smoothing. He agreed. Later he said why he hadn't noticed:
I didn't notice the difference in meaning at that moment, because I read passages that were too large at once. It should perhaps have been presented to me in a more granular way.
(Original: „Ich habe den Bedeutungsunterschied in diesem Moment nicht gemerkt, weil ich zu große Textstellen auf einmal gelesen habe. Es hätte mir vielleicht granularer vorgelegt werden müssen.“)
The shifts were only noticed when comparing against his stored original version; he reversed all four.
