I'm just getting started

Will I get locked in to one AI provider?

Facts as of October 10, 2026

Less than you might fear, if your knowledge lives in open files on your own computer. Switching is possible – but it isn't free.

In detail

Notes, rules, logs and projects stored as Markdown files in a folder on your computer can be read by any program, and any other model could be given them. The connections to email, calendar and files follow MCP, an open standard. Anthropic published it in November 2024 and handed it over to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation on December 9, 2025; OpenAI is a founding contributor there, and Google and Microsoft are platinum members.

What still ties you in: the interface the model uses to work on your own computer is specific to each provider. Rules tuned to the behavior of one particular model have to be tested again with another. And the provider sets the price of the subscription.

In practice

Thomas J. Weiss has tested it: another model was able to take over using the same connections. His knowledge sits on his own computer as a folder of text files, not with the provider.
