How much does AI really cost per month?

In detail
The subscription
Anthropic publicly lists dollar prices excluding tax: Pro $20 a month, $17 when paid annually; Max from $100, monthly only; Team $25 per seat. In euros and for Germany, the account shows €18 net for Pro and from €90 net for Max – €21.42 and €107.10 including VAT.
There is no trial period; the free tier serves as a trial. It comes with web search, files and memory, but without the most capable model, with at most five projects and with a tight usage limit.
Hardware
An existing computer is enough; the model runs on the provider's servers. The desktop app runs on macOS 11 and later and Windows 10 and later. On Linux there is an official app in beta, for Ubuntu 22.04 and later and Debian 12 and later. It can do chat and work in your own folder, but it can't control the screen or take dictation; for work in your own folders it needs hardware virtualization (KVM) and at least 8 GB of RAM. Fedora and RHEL are not supported.
Time
A system made of a model, memory, rules and connections to email, calendar and files isn't finished once it's set up; it needs upkeep, in pieces that each look small and add up. An experience report on dev.to calculates that such a system cost 35 minutes of upkeep a day for eight months and only paid off after about two years, and only in two narrowly defined areas. Economists know this as the “Productivity J-Curve”: a new technology first pushes productivity down, because people invest in invisible things – processes, knowledge, restructuring – and only afterwards does it rise. That isn't guaranteed. More on this under How much time does working with AI take?

In practice
Thomas J. Weiss uses Max himself. To everyone who wants to get started, he recommends one tier lower: start with Pro, try it for a month, and if it doesn't fit, cancel.
A model once “corrected” his price figures – “about 20 euros” („etwa 20 Euro“) and “about 90 euros” („etwa 90 Euro“) – as too low, confusing net with gross. As net prices they were right.
He hopes that the effort is high at the start and drops later, because the systems learn along the way. That is a hope, not a measurement – and it belongs with the price figure.
