Who owns a text I write with AI?

You decide – depending on the project and the role you play in it. If you want to count as the author, you write yourself, and the AI takes on other tasks: typesetting, correcting, keeping records. If it's about knowledge meant to help as many people as possible, you can leave more to it and check what it says.

In detail

The question isn't how much the AI wrote, but who you want to be seen as in the end. With a literary text, an op-ed, a play, you want to be able to say: this is my work. Then you write it yourself, and the AI typesets, corrects, keeps records.

With a collection of answers, guides and assessments, your role is a different one. What counts there is less the style than whether the knowledge is correct and helpful. You set the direction, check and take responsibility; the AI may do the wording. Which tasks it may take on in the first case is covered under Which roles can AI take on in my writing?.

The distinction applies per project, not per person. The same person can write everything themselves in one project and almost nothing in the next. Whether you dictate or write also depends on this distinction, see Should I dictate my text or write it myself?

In practice

Thomas J. Weiss does both. For his play he wrote almost every word himself; of 4,242 spoken words, thirty came from the model at the time of submission on September 2, 2026. On this site, Claude does almost all the wording. In the interview he explained how he separates the two:

That depends on whether in the end I want to say that it is my written work, which I composed as editor or author, or not. If I myself want to be understood as editor or author, then I write myself and use the AI for other roles, that is, for typesetting, as chronicler or for correcting.
