Should I dictate my text or write it myself?

Whether you dictate or write is not a question of the tool but of your role in the project. The question is the same as in Who owns a text I write with AI?: is it your text or not?
A well-worn approach goes like this: speak a rough draft and have an AI clean it up. But then the text doesn't take shape through the written word; instead the AI turns what was spoken into a text. What it orders, smooths and leaves out in the process is already part of the writing.
That's why it pays to split by role:
- Your text: write. For a text you want to be the author of – a play, a story, an opinion piece – write it yourself. Here the precise choice of every word matters.
- Not your text: dictate. Where you're not the author but give direction, answer and check – thoughts on the project, answers in an interview, experiences you want to pass on: you can dictate that. Spoken answers usually need sorting first. The AI takes that on – in order, without adding anything, and with your dictation verbatim alongside, so you can check.

In practice
Thomas J. Weiss wrote his play without voice input, without a spoken rough draft. His reason:
because it was supposed to be precise and carefully considered and a work on the written word

The interviews reviewing the same play, on the other hand, he dictated. The play is talked about; the play itself is written.
For this site he dictates, often at night, because here he is not the author. Asked whether one should dictate or write, he said in October 2026:
… dictate or write, there again the question is, is it my text or is it someone else's? It's always the question of what role I have in a project.

For each answer, Claude creates a sorted version and below it the dictation verbatim. About his answers he says they are
often from the gut and have to be sorted first
