I work in a team

What do individuals gain from sharing their knowledge?

Facts as of October 17, 2026

Less routine, more time for creative work – and the good feeling of being dispensable for a while. People who share often fear losing importance. This is offset by a relief that you often only notice once it happens.

In detail

Whoever shares knowledge that nobody else had before fears losing importance or being measured by it. But there is another side. Whoever works under high pressure and constantly thinks they must not get sick under any circumstances, because otherwise nothing will work anymore, carries a burden. Over time, it becomes a heavy strain – and it eases when others can take over.

Routine that affects the whole team can be reduced together. That makes time for more creative tasks, and the work is more fun.

Behind this lies a hope, not yet a finding: the machines take over the bureaucratic exchange, and people talk face to face about the big picture.

In practice

If someone in the team of Thomas J. Weiss is out, covering for them is easier, because a large part of that person's knowledge is neatly stored in the shared store. That this alone isn't enough is shown in Is it enough to put our knowledge in a shared store?
