Is it enough to put our knowledge in a shared store?
Facts as of October 17, 2026
In detail
Anyone who takes something over from a team vault must have understood how the system is built. It helps to know: you can't break anything in the process, as long as the authoritative source stays with the person it belongs to. Whoever takes over builds their own instance that does something similar.
Leading a team like this takes both: an understanding of the editorial, content-related work and of the technology. And it takes support over a long period until enough team members can handle the system.
In practice
Before a five-week vacation in the summer, Thomas J. Weiss worked overtime to make sure his tools would keep running: daily updates, scheduled tasks, logins on websites. It held for one day. Because some things had been built in a hurry, he had expected this and put a lot into the team store so others could make repairs. It didn't help. Some didn't dare, some weren't yet familiar enough with it, some were afraid of breaking something. He only found out after he got back.
Their instances did have the knowledge, but the people just didn't, to be able to deal with this knowledge.
(Original: „Da hatten zwar ihre Instanzen das Wissen, aber die Personen eben nicht, um mit diesem Wissen umzugehen.“)
His conclusion: for now, it needs his constant support, and it will take a long time until enough team members can handle the system the way he envisions.
